Greetings, fellow adventurers! 🚗✨ Buckle up and join us on an unforgettable road trip through the stunning landscapes of Southern Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. Imagine the open road, the wind in your hair, and the thrill of discovering new places with your best friends and beloved pets. This journey promises not just picturesque views but also heart-pounding hikes, serene water escapes, and moments that will etch themselves into your memory forever. From the bustling cityscape of Las Vegas to the serene deserts and majestic national parks, every turn of this adventure offers something new and exciting. Grab your gear, leash up your furry friends, and let’s hit the road for a trip filled with wonder and discovery!
Day 1: Salt Lake City to Las Vegas
Our adventure begins in Salt Lake City. After a smooth drive to Las Vegas, we picked up our friends, who were glowing with post-wedding bliss. With excitement in the air, we set off to our first stop: the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Red Rock Canyon: A Desert Wonderland
Red Rock Canyon is a must-visit with its vibrant rock formations and extensive hiking trails. We spent a few hours exploring the Calico Hills, marveling at the natural beauty. The dogs loved the open space and the unique scents of the desert. Although we didn’t take any photos, the experience was incredible and left lasting memories.
Day 2-3: St. George, Utah
Next, we made our way to St. George, Utah, our base for the next two days. St. George is a charming city surrounded by incredible natural attractions.
Zion National Park
On our first day, we tackled the famous Angels Landing hike. This thrilling trek is not for the faint of heart but offers unparalleled views from the top. Since dogs are not allowed on most trails in Zion , we used Rover to find a local sitter who could take care of our pups while we explored. The next day, we took on the Narrows, wading through the cool waters of the Virgin River, flanked by towering canyon walls.
Snow Canyon State Park
Snow Canyon was our next stop. We walked the West Canyon Road with our dogs, enjoying the serene landscape and the volcanic rock formations. It’s a quieter alternative to Zion but equally breathtaking.
Day 4-5: Page, Arizona
From St. George, we headed to Page, Arizona. This small town is a gateway to some of the most stunning natural wonders.
Cathedral Wash Trail
Our first hike in Page was the Cathedral Wash Trail . This lesser-known gem offered a challenging but rewarding trek through a dramatic slot canyon. The trail leads you to the Colorado River, where we took a break to hang out and cool off from the desert heat. The pups had a blast navigating the rocky terrain and splashing in the river.
Lake Powell
One of my favorite places on earth, Lake Powell never ceases to amaze. We rented a speed boat for a day on the lake. Cruising through the turquoise waters, surrounded by red rock canyons, was a highlight of the trip. We swam, explored hidden coves, and soaked up the sun.
Horseshoe Bend
Just a short drive from Page, we visited the iconic Horseshoe Bend. This breathtaking overlook offers a stunning view of a dramatic bend in the Colorado River, encircled by steep canyon walls. It’s a relatively easy hike to the viewpoint, and the vista is absolutely worth it. Make sure to bring your camera to capture the awe-inspiring scenery.
Day 6-7: Monument Valley to Moab, Utah
Leaving Page, we drove through the iconic Monument Valley. The towering sandstone buttes made for a picturesque drive, and we took plenty of stops to capture the views in our minds, as we didn’t get a lot of photos this time around.
Moab: Arriving in Moab, we spent two days exploring its famous national parks.
Canyonlands National Park
- Island in the Sky: This district offers panoramic views that will leave you speechless. Make sure to visit Mesa Arch for a stunning sunrise or sunset.
- Newspaper Rock : This historical site features one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs. It’s an incredible glimpse into the past, etched into the rock by ancient peoples.
Arches National Park
- Delicate Arch: This is perhaps the most iconic arch in the park, and the hike to it is equally rewarding. Be sure to carry plenty of water and start early to avoid the heat.
- Sand Dune Arch: My personal favorite, this trail is like nature’s big playground. The huge rock formations are perfect for climbing and exploring, making it a fun adventure for all ages.
Final Leg: Back to Salt Lake City
As our epic road trip began to draw to a close, we made our way back to Salt Lake City, cherishing the last moments of our journey. The laughter shared, the challenges overcome, and the breathtaking vistas experienced with friends and pets created a tapestry of memories that will last a lifetime. Saying goodbye to our friends, who flew back to Phoenix, was bittersweet, but the bond forged on this trip remains strong. This journey through Southern Utah, Arizona, and Nevada was filled with adventure, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences that have forever enriched our lives.
